The Vadodara Circle came into existence on 1st January 1985, when it was separated from the then Western Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), with the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Union Territories of Daman & Diu under its jurisdiction. The Vadodara Circle, with its jurisdiction in the state of Gujarat and Union Territories of Daman & Diu, is responsible for undertaking excavations and explorations here, maintenance, conservation, and preservation and promotion of 213 centrally protected monuments and sites – 202 in Gujarat, and 11 in Daman & Diu – as per provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, amended as the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act, 2010, and Rules made thereunder, besides regulating export of antiquities and art treasures under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972, and Rules framed thereto.

The Champaner - Pavagadh Archaeological Park in District Panchmahal, Gujarat, is so far the only cultural heritage site in Gujarat inscribed on the list of the World Heritage Sites of UNESCO.
